Short description of the study programme |
Our Faculty offers two PhD programmes -- in Civil Engineering and in Earth Sciences -- in continuation of the three master programs. By choosing the research topic in your application, you are implicitly selecting the respective PhD programme. Research at the Faculty is supported by accredited testing laboratories for building materials, structures, rocks and fluids; state-of-the-art field equipment for survey and monitoring, as well as specialised professional software. The programme in Civil Engineering Sciences covers structural, geotechnical, transportation and water infrastructure engineering, in strong contact with the industry. Research topics in structural engineering include building physics; design, diagnostics and sustainability of building materials and constructions; fire safety; field testing and computational design of bridges and building structures; fragility of structures subjected to extreme actions; structural stability; topology optimization; biomechanics; masonry, cable and tent structures; geotechnics; rock mechanics and engineering geology. As to infrastructure engineering, research topics are offered in hydrodynamics of rivers and lakes; ecohydraulics; hydrology of rural and urban catchments; hydrogeology and ecosystems; water and wastewater treatment infrastructure and technology; pollution and nutrient transport in natural waters; river basin management; design and monitoring of road and railway track structure. The programme in Earth Sciences covers surveying, geodesy, remote sensing and geoinformatics engineering. Research topics include: GNSS positioning and remote sensing, interferometric SAR imagery, high-resolution monitoring of structural deformations, gravity field studies, big-data acquisition sensors and modelling processes, high-definition mapping for autonomous vehicles, computer vision. We are co-operating with other fields to create multidisciplinary applications: culture heritage protection, military, transportation, medicine, hydrology, geosciences, geology and space industry. |

Description of selection and entrance examination process |
At each of the following steps, the set of applicants is narrowed: 1) Pre-evaluation of the submitted documents: quality of MSc diploma, quality of MSc and BSc transcripts, quality of research plan; additional evaluated aspects: mention of the preference for one of our active research topics in the research proposal, quality of motivation letter, recommendation letters, extra-curricular activities (e.g. involvement in education, research, publication activities, technical contests, additional language knowledge, etc.) 2) Electronic test on general mathematical knowledge 3) Interview (via internet or in person, according to applicant’s choice): evaluation of language skills (the interview is in English), motivation, attitude, technical preparedness in the selected research field; 4) Result: admission to PhD programme /admission rejected
