James Danly, who is responsible for energy affairs, discussed nuclear technology, particularly small modular reactors.

On Monday, James Danly, Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States, visited BME. At the university's training reactor, he was welcomed by Rector Charaf Hassan, Attila Aszódi, dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Szabolcs Czifrus, director of the Institute of Nuclear Techniques and Máté Szieberth, head of the Department of Nuclear Techniques. He then discussed possible university collaborations in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy with Mr Aszódi.

Deputy Secretary Danly not only toured the training reactor and its laboratories, but also experienced operating the training reactor with the assistance of instructors from the Institute of Nuclear Techniques.

In addition to current issues related to Hungary's electricity supply, the meeting focused primarily on the steps necessary for the introduction of small modular reactor (SMR) technology and on the issue of training new nuclear specialists. The installation of small modular reactors, and a possible US–Hungarian cooperation in the field of nuclear energy were key topics at the meeting between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and US President Donald Trump in Washington DC in November. Deputy Secretary James Danly's visit to the BME was a follow-up of that high-level meeting.
