It is included in the group of higher education institutions that do the most to introduce the European Student Card.

The European Commission has awarded BME the ESCI Champion title for the 2025-2027 period, recognizing the university's achievements in the digital mobility management of the Erasmus+ program, according to the Tempus Public Foundation's website. The award is given to higher education institutions that play a prominent role in the implementation of the European Student Card Initiative (ESCI).

The aim of the ESCI is to facilitate student mobility and administration by introducing a digital, universally accepted European student card and related online services. The idea is that the card and its digital infrastructure will enable students to easily prove their student status other European universities, access services (e.g., library, cafeteria, sports facilities), and handle administrative matters paperlessly.

A total of 123 universities from 30 European countries applied for this year's call, and those institutions that made the most progress in implementing the various components of ESCI were selected. The Commission paid particular attention to the results achieved in the Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) system, and BME has done a lot in recent years to introduce and apply digital solutions, thereby promoting the efficient administration of Erasmus+.

ESCI Champion institutions – the University of Barcelona, the University of Pavia and the University of Stockholm, among others – will participate even more actively in ESCI-related developments over the next two years, sharing their experiences at domestic and international forums, consultations and events promoting the results.
