The two institutions have launched joint seed projects in materials science and nanotechnology.

This summer, BME signed an agreement with Portugal-based International Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) about cooperation in the field of materials science and nanotechnology. The results of the first call for proposals announced within the framework of the partnership are out: the two institutions are supporting five research projects, each worth €6,000, with funding split equally between them.

According to the call for proposals, applications could be submitted for targeted, small-scale R&D activities or researcher exchanges (competence transfer, PhD student training), the creation of consortia, and the support of joint research projects. An important requirement was the involvement of BME students and a commitment to submit joint international applications.

The programs will start on January 1, 2026, and will last for 12-18 months.

The winning projects are:

Investigation of Novel Nanomaterial Systems for Plasmonics Sensing
Leaders: Attila Bonyár (BME VIK) and Sara Abalde (INL)

Fluorescence detection of microplastics in aqueous media
Leaders: Dóra Hessz (BME VBK) and Begoña Espiña (INL)

Out-of-Equilibrium Supramolecular Assembly for Scalable Manufacturing of Graphene-Based Materials
Leaders: István Lagzi (BME TTK) and Yury Kolenko (INL)

Fabrication and Atomic-Scale Characterization of Hybrid 2D Material Heterostructures: Electronic Structure and Catalytic Properties
Leaders: Levente Tapasztó (BME TTK; HUN-REN MFA) and Tahir Muhmood (INL).
