EELISA Joint Call 6

One of them is led by BME. It will focus on the sustainable production of energy for artificial intelligence.

European university alliance EELISA has announced the results of the sixth round of its Joint Call, which supports educational cooperation between member institutions. BME leads ene of the winning projects, and it also participates in three others.

For those who don't know, EELISA is an alliance of 10 European universities, primarily with a technical profile, and BME is the only member from Hungary. The partners include such renowned institutions as the École des Ponts ParisTech in France, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Nuremberg, and the Technical University of Madrid.

The BME-led program will be a four-day hackathon where students will work in small groups, but in a hybrid model (on-site and online), to find solutions for reducing the energy consumption of artificial intelligence.

"The basic premise is that we should not take the unlimited use of AI for granted, as it consumes a lot of energy.

Using real-life examples, we look at how this aspect can be taken into account when training an algorithm," project leader Ágnes Urbin, assistant professor at the Department of Mechatronics, Optics, and Mechanical Engineering Informatics, told bme.hu.

According to the announcement, 22 entries were received, of which a dozen will receive funding of up to €12,000 each. According to the judges, the selected initiatives are characterized by originality, social impact, and the use of active learning methods such as challenge-based, project-based, and research-based learning.
