CWUR places BME in the global top 5 percent of universities

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) has released its latest rankings. BME is the 1,051st on the list, placing it among the top 5 percent of the 21,291 institutions ranked. In terms of educational quality, it is 174th, which, given the number of competitors, can well be interpreted as a place within the elite.

Also, this is the best result among all Hungarian universities in the particular category.

As for the general rankings, Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Szeged, the University of Debrecen and Semmelweis University are the other ones to make it into the top 5 percent from Hungary. The global frontrunners are the traditional heavyweights of the Anglo-Saxon academic world: 1. Harvard, 2. MIT, 3. Stanford, 4. Cambridge, 5. Oxford, 6. Princeton, 7. University of Pennsylvania, 8. Columbia, 9. Yale, 10. University of Chicago.

The CWUR is the fourth most well-known international university ranking after QS, THE, and ARWU. Why it’s worth paying attention to: it neither uses reputation surveys nor relies on universities’ self-reports; instead, it works exclusively with indicators considered objective. It examines four main criteria: graduates’ success in the job market, the quality of teaching, faculty excellence, and research performance.

The first criterion carries particular weight — for example, alumni who hold leadership positions at the world’s largest companies. The scientific achievements of researchers also count for a great deal, including the receipt of the most prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize, the Fields Medal or the Turing Award.
