BME Emerges as 6th best at the European University Games

BME athletes won two gold medals at the European University Games held in Salerno, Italy: following the men’s beach handball team’s championship title, the women’s beach volleyball team also came first.

The duo of Eszter Vasvári and Zsófi Vasvári got off to a good start in the tournament, progressing to the knockout stages as group winners, before fighting their way through the losers’ bracket to the final following a slip-up. There, they came back from behind to defeat the pair from the University of Ljubljana.

It took them nine matches over five days to secure the championship victory.

At the Games, 400 teams from nearly 200 universities across 31 European countries competed in 30 sports. With two gold medals, BME became Hungary’s most successful university and finished sixth in the overall medal table. In the nations’ rankings, Hungary proved to be the fourth best.

Incidentally, just a few days after returning home, the Vasvári sisters achieved another outstanding success: they won a silver medal at the national beach volleyball championship.
