Three BME Professors Recognised With State Honours For Their Outstanding Work
2026. 08. 25.Mihály Balázs, Tibor Berceli and Gyula Katona were honoured on 20 August for their decades of work in research, teaching and creative endeavours. Our article features recent lectures and interviews with the honourees.
Mihály Balázs, a Kossuth Prize-winning architect and professor emeritus at the Faculty of Architecture of BME, was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (Civil Division). The award recognised his outstanding architectural career, which includes numerous iconic buildings, as well as nearly four decades of teaching that has shaped generations of architects.

Tibor Berceli, Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics of BME, was also awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (Civil Division). He was honoured for his internationally significant achievements in research, development and innovation in the field of microwave telecommunications, as well as for his outstanding contributions to academic education.
Tibor Berceli’s life’s work was also featured in an episode of the VIK75 series of professor portraits (in Hungarian):
Gyula Katona, a professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, has been awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of Hungary (Civil Division) for his internationally recognised scientific work in the field of hypergraphs, as well as for his pivotal role in the mathematical training of engineers.
