Nobel Prize-winning Physicist To Give a Talk at BME
2026. 09. 25.Klaus von Klitzing received the most prestigious scientific honour 40 years ago.
Professor Klaus von Klitzing, winner of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physics, will be a guest at BME on 6 October. The German scientist will give a talk (in English) entitled From the Silicon Transistor to Quantum Metrology: An Unexpected Journey of Basic Research in the Simonyi lecture hall, Building Q, from 14:30 to 15:30.
Von Klitzing was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the quantized Hall effect. The classical Hall effect, known since 1879, occurs when an electric current flows through a planar electrical conductor in the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane: a voltage develops between the two sides of the conductor as a result of the Lorentz force acting on the electrons. The quantized Hall effect differs in that, in a sufficiently high-quality two-dimensional electron gas, the Hall resistance changes in discrete steps rather than varying linearly with the magnetic field. Its value can be calculated using a universal constant.
Attendance at the lecture is free, but you must register in advance here.
