American Engineering students in Budapest

Rector of the BME, and Director of International Engineering Studies and Programs of the UW-Madison have discussed possibilities for future cooperation between the two institutions.

Amanda Hammatt, Director of International Engineering Studies and Programs of the University of Wisconsin-Madison had discussions with Gábor Péceli, rector and other employees of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, next she visited Budapest University of Technology and Economics Erasmus Office and attended a lecture at the faculty.

The largest number of students of the American educational institution wishing to take studies in Europe chooses Hungary for their partial one-term international programme; more of them come to Hungary than to Denmark or England. For more than a decade 25-30 of the students have been choosing the University of Technology for their one-term studies. According to Mrs. Hammat’s feedback their students are satisfied with the result of their studies at BME, they love Budapest, and therefore leaders of the American institution are planning to establish long-term cooperation between the two universities. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has some 45 thousand students; Mrs. Amanda Hammat organizes international placement programmes for 7 thousand engineering students.

During the discussions it was revealed that American students are mostly interested in summer school type programmes. „Students and their families are concerned that if the partial international training takes place during the school year the term is lost and the family would be bound to finance another term. This is why it would be reasonable to promote the 6-8 weeks summer programme of the Budapest University,” explained László Dvorszki, BME Director for International Relations.During the discussions it was revealed that American students are mostly interested in summer school type programmes. „Students and their families are concerned that if the partial international training takes place during the school year the term is lost and the family would be bound to finance another term.
