BME ranked in top three percent among the world’s higher education institutions

It is the second time BME has got a good ranking in the latest edition of QS World University, and it is the best Hungarian university in terms of citations.

This year 980 universities have been selected to feature in the latest world ranking edition compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds. The Spanish company – specialised in ranking tertiary institutions – have surveyed 4,000 universities out of the 26,000 operating worldwide, and approximately a 1,000 have been given a ranking. From this number, the best 400 universities were awarded with an individual ranking while the remaining institutions were put into groups of ten (between 401 and 500), and groups of 50 between 501 and 800, while those above 801 were not further categorised.

Out of the 4,322 universities evaluated by QS, six Hungarian universities could get into the top 1,000, and BME is listed among fifty other higher education ranked between 751 and 800.  Szeged University was given the best ranking this year; it is in the group 501-550; ELTE and Debrecen are both in the range between 651 and 700, BME and Pécs are in the group 751 and 800, while Corvinus has been positioned between 801 and 1,000.

For the sixth year running, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads the way at the top of the rankings, closely followed by other Stanford and Harvard.

Here are the results of the universities operating in the four Visegrad countries:

The Czech Republic
Charles University: 314th place, Czech Technical University: 491-500th place, Masaryk University: 551-600th place, Brno University of Technology: 601-650th place, and Palacký University:701-750th place.

Poland
University of Warsaw: 411-420th place, Jagiellonian University: 461-470th place, Warsaw University of Technology: 601-650th place, Adam Mickiewicz University, AGH University of Science and Technology, University of Lodz, Nicolaus Copernicus University, University of Wroclaw, Wroclaw University of Technology: between 801 and 1,000.

Slovakia
Comenius University: 701-750th place.

There were six performance indicators taken into account when making the final rankings: academic reputation (40%), citations/faculty (20%), the faculty/student ratio (20%), employer reputation (10%), and the ratio of international faculty (5%) and international students (5%).

BME ranked best among Hungary’s higher education institutions in terms of total number of publications, not only according to the regional but also to the global ranking made by QS. (Editor notes: To prepare this year’s ranking, the citation counts have been altered: the citations window used for this year’s citations per faculty metric have been received between 2011 and 2016, while next year’s QS World University Rankings will measure those received between 2012 and 2017). In this area, BME has made considerable progress: compared to the 2016 results it has now gone up two categories and is now in the second group, between 401 and 500.

In terms of employers’ feedback, BME is the best university in Hungary (just like in 2016) and on the international list it is also in the 401+ category. BME has also achieved good results in the metric of academic reputation; and finished between 401 and 500 as well.
