Furthermore, the number of students arriving at BME is also growing while BME students can now choose to study at 8 different prestigious European universities after the university joined the EELISA alliance. 

The degree programmes of BME open the door to many foreign universities for Hungarian students while BME’s foreign language programmes attract students from across the world. Balázs Vince Nagy, BME’s vice-rector for international affairs when talking about the university’s international programmes and current application opportunities said that ‘the two main groups of our international cooperation activities are student mobility programmes and double degrees as well as study opportunities offered to foreign students in Hungary’. He added that the Directorate for International Affairs is inviting BME students to apply for Erasmus scholarships and traineeships as well as overseas degree programmes.

The vice-rector for international affairs stressed that BME students can choose from the universities of 75 countries to complete a part of their studies and have the opportunity to obtain a double degree in numerous higher education institutions in addition to completing their studies at BME. Last year, over 400 BME students studied abroad through exchange programmes, joint programmes and research projects. BME currently offers 39 bachelor, master and doctoral degree programmes in English.  Certain degree programmes are also available in German and French. In addition to obtaining their degree from BME, BME students in electrical engineering and informatics, mechanical engineering and energetics programmes have the opportunity to obtain a degree from Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie, the Heriot-Watt University, the Royal Institute of Technology and the University College of South East Norway, the Delft University of Technology, the University of Trento or even the Politecnica de Madrid .

Balázs Vince Nagy emphasized that BME joined a new and progressive initiative in the area of international networking in 2020 when it entered into an alliance with eight other prestigious European universities to work as part of the EELISA consortium to start joint degree programmes and research projects while making efforts to achieve the long-term goal of a single cross-border European accreditation in engineering. This cooperation allows BME students to study at the universities of Pisa, Erlangen, Istanbul, Paris, Madrid and Bucharest.

As foreign language programmes attract more and more students every year and BME’s popularity has continued to grow in the last two years, the rate of international students at BME is constantly rising. Students from foreign countries, totalling nearly 2,400 at present, represent over 12% of BME’s enrolment. In the 2020/21 academic year, roughly 1,400 young people are studying at BME as part of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme, which ranks our university second in Hungary as a whole. Last year, a total of 5,600 students applied to BME as a first option under the programme and 750 were admitted. This year, BME’s popularity rose even higher. Members of BME’s mentoring network, renowned for their excellent work throughout Hungary, helped foreign students settle here and achieve good academic results. New graduates in 2020 come from over 30 countries, most coming from China and Brazil, but also from Algeria, Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Libya, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Russia, South Africa, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam. Hungarian students can complete the same English language courses, together in the international fee-paying system, as students in the Erasmus and Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programmes. The latter mostly arrive from the same countries as the fee-paying students.

In recent years, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics has achieved prestigious positions in an increasing number of international (global and European) higher education rankings (THE, ARWU, QS). The global list of the Times Higher Education (THE) published last year awarded the highest score to BME among Hungarian universities in the field of industry income and the second highest score in research activities.
