BME students did well at the international meeting in Bucharest.

The third edition of the EELISA Scientific Student Competition, launched by EELISA on the initiative of the BME, was recently held in Bucharest. One of the important novelties of the event was that not only students from the 10 member universities of the association could enter. Three papers arrived from other institusions - one from Rome's La Sapienza, one from the University of Duisburg-Essen and one from the University of Manchester.

"We made the competition open because last year, during the Budapest event, we received several signals that students from other European universities were interested. I hope that next year in Madrid there will be even more external participants," Balázs Kövesdi, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BME, who collaborated with other BME lecturers in organising the event, told bme.hu.

“If the SSC could really spread beyond the association, it would be good for everyone, as competing on the international stage is very important and a great opportunity for young researchers,” said Mr Kövesdi. He added that it would also be necessary to have more judges from various EELISA member institutions than this year, “last year we were able to assemble a more international jury”.

Asked whether BME would continue to play an active role in organising, he said yes. “It's natural, because we bring tradition and experience through the many decades of the Hungarian competitions, the TDK, and we want to pass it on.”

For the third EELISA SSC, 143 students registered papers, 50 of them from BME. The number of prizes awarded by the jury (BME results in brackets):
1st prize: 15 (11)
2nd prize: 16 (7)
3rd prize: 6 (1)
Special prize: 19 (11)

The organisers were satisfied with the quality of the papers: the jury presidents met after the competition and unanimously said that the standard proved to be high. “I received a lot of good feedback from students, so we can say that the competition was very successful,” said Balázs Kövesdi.

In addition to applied informatics, applied sciences, automation, life sciences, built environment, architecture, innovative mobility, smart manufacturing, AI technologies, social sciences and chemical and bioengineering, there was a special section for papers prepared with artificial intelligence - and all of its prizes were won by BME students.
