BME in international rankings
BME ranks among the top 1-2% of over 50,000 universities worldwide, according to major international rankings.
Ranked 12th best university in the region and 1st in Hungary by publications
In the QS Europe University Rankings published in July 2024, BME was ranked 247th overall and 12th in the Eastern European region. The university also ranks 59th in Europe for the number of international exchange students, underscoring BME’s strong global presence. Furthermore, BME is the top university in Hungary for the number of publications per faculty member, making it the most active scientific institution in the country.
In the QS World University Rankings published in June 2025, BME was ranked 711-720. This global ranking evaluates universities across all fields of study. Among the 10 Hungarian institutions ranked, BME stands as the top Hungarian university of applied sciences.
The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject rankings, published in March 2025, evaluated over 16,000 programmes from the world’s top 1,500 higher education institutions. BME is the only Hungarian university ranked in the field of engineering, placing 231st globally. It is the top Hungarian institution across all engineering disciplines. BME’s mechanical engineering program has been ranked in the top 200 for the fourth consecutive year, while its civil and chemical engineering programmes are ranked in the top 300. Additionally, as a technical university, BME excels in the natural sciences as well, securing 383rd place.
In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026, published in November 2025, BME ranked 599th overall, making it the 19th best university in the Eastern European region. In the Environmental Education indicator, BME is ranked 221st globally, 2nd in Eastern Europe, and 1st in Hungary.

In 2025, BME is one of the four Hungarian universities featured in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, recognised for its outstanding scientific achievements and Nobel Laureate alumni. Currently, BME ranks between 801st and 900th.
In the 2025 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), BME is ranked in four subject areas, being the only Hungarian institution in three of them: 101-150 in civil engineering, 201-300 in chemistry, and 401-500 in materials science.
HUNGARIAN RANKINGS – HVG Diploma
In Hungary, BME leads the university rankings published by HVG in November 2025. In the faculty rankings, three BME faculties are ranked among the top 10: the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics.
