Robust support functions are needed to operate the systems
2026. 03. 20.Dávid Bauer, who joined BME from Hungary-based oil and gas company MOL as general director in the second half of last year, has outlined an ambitious transformation agenda in an interview with bme.hu, focusing on strengthening the operational efficiency and the support functions.
Drawing on his corporate background in HR and internal audit, Dávid Bauer emphasized that while BME’s core strengths in education and research are unquestionable, the systems underpinning these activities require significant modernization to match corporate-level effectiveness. (The original interview can be read here in Hungarian.)
He highlighted the scale and complexity of the institution — spanning extensive infrastructure and numerous departments — as a key challenge, particularly in aligning administrative and support services with academic needs. Mr Bauer stressed that faculties should be treated as internal clients, with support units acting as strategic partners delivering high-quality, predictable services. Stronger, more integrated support systems are essential to enable long-term planning and consistent performance, he added.
A major shift has been introduced at the uversity in financial planning, moving from a traditional budgetary approach to a business-oriented accounting model that incorporates depreciation, long-term project cycles, and revenue allocation. This transition requires a broader cultural change, which Mr Bauer expects will take time, with the current year focused on “putting things in order” and identifying development priorities.
Quick wins include simplifying processes — such as radically reducing the number procurement steps — and expanding digital solutions. Longer-term plans involve restructuring support functions, introducing category-based procurement, and addressing missing areas like health, safety, and environmental management.
In IT, the general director aims to improve user experience through standardized operations, lifecycle management of devices, and a unified strategy to reduce fragmentation. Infrastructure investments are already underway, and preparations have begun for a comprehensive campus development and real estate strategy based on detailed asset assessments.
He also underscores the benefits of closer cooperation with MOL, owner of BME Fenntartó Zrt. (the entity responsible for maintaining BME), including knowledge transfer, advisory support, and improved management culture, while preserving institutional independence. Overall, Dávid Bauer envisions a more efficient, strategically managed university where modernized support functions enhance BME’s academic excellence.
